Uptown
Seven tracks across the full new jack swing spectrum — tight swing beat bangers, NJS meets hip-hop street edge, and slow jam emotional depth. Falsetto runs and vocal chops woven throughout. The most 90s record Hustle Beats has ever made.
The concept
UPTOWN is the Hustle Beats new jack swing EP. Seven instrumentals spanning the complete NJS universe — the tight swing drum machine beats and keyboard stabs of pure new jack swing, the harder 808-influenced NJS hip-hop crossover, and the slow jam emotional depth that made the genre more than just dancefloor music.
New jack swing was the moment R&B got a drum machine and hip-hop got a melody. The swing beat — where the subdivision swings between straight and triplet — is the most distinctive rhythmic feel in popular music. Without the swing, nothing else about these tracks matters. Falsetto vocal chops and runs appear throughout as texture — the sound of the genre without any of its lyrics.
